Preacher, Mount Goliath
This shape protruding from a long fallen log cast aside in Mount Evans' Mount Goliath Natural Area would not be obvious to the casual visitor. Years ago I spent a day prowling around Mount Goliath, fascinated by the forms assumed by its timberline-twisted wood. I don't remember what led me to this one. After walking around it for a while I knew there was something there - but it just wasn't revealing itself. As I sat on the ground in front of him to rest, I looked up from a different vantage point and began to see a raised arm, then a head, then a tapered body seeming to emerge from the tangle of wood at his base. Getting as low to the ground as possible helped isolate his thrusting arm against the descending background fog, pointing towards the heavens.
