Estes Park, Colorado (2013)
Everyone needs fuel. This National Guard fills his gas cans from the local Shell station. Until trucks can make it up the canyon, supplies of anything are considered finite. But a tribute to the proprietor: the price per gallon was that of what I paid in Fort Collins just that morning - atypical for the tourist destination where everything is usually at a premium. We debated whether to draw on their fuel supply to ensure our safe return home - and decided for us it was better than the alternative. Under normal conditions fuel stops along multiple routes to and from Estes are plentiful. But road closures force longer, mountainous, remote routes - with no fuel availability.
